Bodies of Fort Worth couple to be flown back from Fiji, but how they died remains a mystery –

July 1st, 2019

FORT WORTH, Texas — Michelle and David Paul loved traveling, almost as much as they loved their family.

“This week we were all supposed to be in San Antonio on vacation for the 4th of July,” said their sister-in-law Tracey Calanog.

But instead of vacationing this week, their family is instead waiting for Michelle and David’s bodies to be flown back to America from Fiji.

“It’s incredibly surreal that now we’re at their house and trying to heal and they’re not here,” Calanog said. “It’s hard.”

Calanog says it’s been nearly 40 agonizing days since the Pauls mysteriously died while on a vacation of a lifetime in Fiji.

“They’d been throwing up for eight or nine hours,” Calanog said.

In recent days, the family says the CDC ruled out influenza or infectious disease as their cause of death.

“So they have turned their focus to toxins or anything that may have been ingested,” Calanog said.

That includes the possibility they were poisoned. The family says they’re not ruling anything out and are awaiting toxicology results from Australia in the coming weeks.

A video Michelle took of David at a restaurant in Fiji was shared there as investigators try to re-trace the couple’s steps, including what and where they ate. Their deaths remain front-page news in the South Pacific island nation.

Monday night, Michelle’s father Marc Calanog told WFAA the couple’s bodies have finally been cleared by the US Embassy to be shipped back home. He hopes to have them back within a week. They will then have a funeral.

Back home in Fort Worth, a garden David started in the backyard with their son still blooms.

“He was a family person through and through,” Tracey Calanog said. “They both were.”

But the family worries they may never know why these young parents and young travelers lost their lives.

Harry Styles & Louis Tomlinson ‘Euphoria’ Sex Scene: HBO Show Did Not Ask The Former One Direction Bandmates For Approval – Stereogum

July 1st, 2019

HBO’s new Drake-produced series Euphoria follows a cast of troubled teens. In yesterday’s third episode, one of those teens gets really into writing fan-fiction. She writes about a sexual encounter between former One Direction bandmates Louis Tomlinson and Harry Styles, or “Larry Stylinson.” An animated cartoon illustrates her graphic story of the two singers fooling around backstage on the first night of the Take Me Home Tour.

Today, Tomlinson expressed his disapproval in a tweet: “I can categorically say that I was not contacted nor did I approve it.” Styles has yet to make a comment. Maybe they should take it up with Drake. Watch the scene and read Tomlinson’s reaction below.

Migrants held in ‘horrifying’ conditions at Texas border facility: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez – Global News

July 1st, 2019

Migrants held at a border patrol station in Texas were being kept in “horrifying” conditions that included psychological abuse and being told to drink out of toilets, Representative Alexandria OcasioCortez said after a visit to the facility with other U.S. lawmakers on Monday.

Story continues below

A delegation of lawmakers from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus were touring the border patrol facilities following reports from a government watchdog that immigrants were being housed in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions.

First-term Democratic Congresswoman OcasioCortez wrote on Twitter after leaving the main border patrol station in El Paso that she had seen women in cells with no water who had been told to drink out of toilets.

“After I forced myself into a cell w/ women&began speaking to them, one of them described their treatment at the hands of officers as “psychological warfare,” she wrote.

“This has been horrifying so far.”

Reuters could not independently confirm her account. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), which oversees Border Patrol, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on her statements.

Conditions at U.S. facilities holding migrants along the U.S.-Mexico border have become a flashpoint in recent weeks after an internal government watchdog warned of “dangerous overcrowding” at the El Paso facility in May. In June, immigration lawyers raised alarms over squalid conditions facing hundreds of children at another facility in Clint, Texas. The lawmakers visited both Texas facilities on Monday.

U.S. President Donald Trump has made cracking down on illegal immigration a centerpiece of his administration, but officials say a renewed crush of mostly Central Americans arriving at the border has strained resources.

Facebook group

The Border Patrol also came under fire on Monday following a report by the non-profit news site ProPublica that said offensive content had been posted on a private Facebook group for current and former CBP officers. Posts included jokes about the deaths of migrants and sexually explicit comments referencing OcasioCortez, a representative from New York, the news outlet reported.

After leaving the El Paso facility, OcasioCortez wrote in a tweet, “I see why CBP officers were being so physically & sexually threatening towards me,” an apparent reference to the Facebook group.

CBP condemned the Facebook group and acknowledged that it may include a number of the agency’s employees.

Matthew Klein, Assistant Commissioner of CBP’s Office of Professional Responsibility, called the social media activity “disturbing” and said it violated the agency’s code of conduct. Klein said the matter had been referred to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) inspector general, which has jurisdiction over the CBP.

According to a screen shot published by ProPublica, the Facebook group had 9,500 members.

“These posts are completely inappropriate and contrary to the honor and integrity I see – and expect – from our agents day in and day out. Any employees found to have violated our standards of conduct will be held accountable,” U.S. Border Patrol Chief Carla Provost said in a statement.

Border Patrol agents have expressed their own concerns about conditions at facilities, according to documents published Monday from the DHS Inspector General that supported the watchdog’s May report.

The documents revealed U.S. agents feared riots by migrants being held in overcrowded and unsanitary cells and were “embarrassed” and “frustrated” by the detainees’ conditions at El Paso.

The documents  were obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request from website MuckRock and first reported by NBC News on Monday. They showed DHS inspectors had found on a May 7 visit that more than half of the 756 immigrants being held at the El Paso facility were kept outside, and those inside were in cells packed at five times their capacity.

Border Patrol agents “remained armed in the holding areas because of their concerns with the overcrowding that potentially could result in volatile situations,” the documents revealed. Government inspectors saw migrants standing on toilets because there was not enough room in cells and other examples of unsanitary conditions leading to concerns about illness among the agents, the documents said.

CBP did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the documents. The U.S. government responded to the report in a letter to the watchdog included in the supporting documents. The situation “represents an acute and worsening crisis” and the surging numbers of migrants were overwhelming the agencies, the letter said.

Acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan said in a statement on Monday he would be traveling to El Salvador for a two-day visit to discuss “the root causes of irregular migration” and would meet with Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez in Honduras.

He traveled to Guatemala last week for meetings that included discussions of a “third safe country” agreement, which could potentially limit who could apply for asylum in the United States.

Florida woman dies of flesh-eating bacteria after a fall on Gulf Coast beach – WPXI Pittsburgh

July 1st, 2019

A Florida woman developed flesh-eating bacteria and died of the disease last week after a small cut on her shin became infected.

Manatee County resident Lynn Fleming was walking along a Gulf of Mexico beach on Anna Maria Island when she tripped and fell, nicking her shin and receiving a cut about three quarters of an inch long, according to news reports.

“She didn’t know that there was a small ditch there and she stumbled and hit the embankment on the other side,” her son, Wade Fleming, told CBS News

That was June 10.

Days later, when Lynn Fleming’s leg began swelling and turning black, she was rushed to a hospital where doctors diagnosed necrotizing fasciitis, WFLA-TV reported. Fleming died after a week and a half of treatment. The rare but potentially deadly bacterial infection kills the body’s soft tissue. That’s what happened in Lynn Fleming’s case, although a 12-year-old girl, also infected last month after swimming in Florida waters, survived the bacteria.

“I’m still numb. You know, it’s two weeks and I lost my mother,” Wade Fleming said. “It’s been hard.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate between 500 to 1,000 people a year develop the illness. The bacteria is usually found in warmer waters such as the Gulf of Mexico, but is making an appearance in areas farther north along the East Coast as water temperatures increase.

That Was a Really Rough Episode of The Bachelorette – E! NEWS

July 1st, 2019

Hannah Brown has had a seriously rough season of The Bachelorette, and tonight’s episode was one of the roughest, which is saying a lot.

There were a couple of bright spots, like her entire date with Tyler C. He continued to prove that he’s one of the best guys this show has ever had and certainly the best guy Hannah’s got, even as he was made to get over his fear of horses.

We also watched Hannah’s date with Jed, which went well from Hannah’s perspective at the time.

Then, things started to go really downhill.

Connor learned he would not be getting a one-on-one, and so he went to Hannah’s hotel room to talk to her. The talk didn’t go well for him. She pointed out how he had disappeared in group dates ever since their fairly successful date weeks ago, and said she was no longer feeling it.

Then, the guy who did get the final one-on-one of the week also went home.

Mike and Hannah seemed to have a really nice time, but then we found Hannah crying as she walked through a museum full of paintings.

“I got to, like, see all the, like, art and stuff, and I’ve never been surrounded by, like, so much beauty, and it’s just really overwhelming,” she explained. “There was this painting. It was like, Saint Catherine, and she like, is holding a sword and a bible and there’s like these men in the background and they’re like, all fighting, and it just, like, it really just encompassed everything that I’m going through right now, I think.”

She then sent Mike home, explaining that she’s just not the lady for him.

Up next, it was time for a date with Peter, Garrett, and Luke, and honestly if we were Hannah we would have faked a sickness and stayed home. It was just as bad as it was obviously going to be, with Luke claiming he’s never done anything wrong and it’s Garrett who’s causing the problems, and then she sat down with Garrett and just wanted to know about Luke.

When she connected with Peter, that went well, and Peter got himself an early rose, which left Luke and Garrett for the typical two-on-one dinner that ends with only one man remaining.

Then, we had to listen to Luke explain that one time when God came to him in the shower, and he saw heaven in the ceiling, and we also had to hear him use the term “fleshly desires,” and Hannah was INTO IT. She loved that he opened up about his faith! We knew this was coming, and we already know Luke makes it to the fantasy suite so they can have that conversation where she blows up at him.

Despite an eventual good time with Garrett, she sent him home and gave Luke the rose, and at this point the only thing that’s keeping us going is that conversation that was expanded in tonight’s incredible “coming up next week” trailer, in which Hannah admits she had sex in a windmill. Twice! And if Luke’s opinion is that if she had sex with one of the other guys then he’s gotta go, then he’s gotta go! Bye Luke! Don’t let the door hit you on the way out! (We cannot wait to find out who she had sex with in a windmill!)

It’s gotten to the point where we can’t actually listen to Luke speak, so we’re not sure how Hannah’s managed all of these conversations, but boy can we not wait to watch him lose his mind over her sex life.

Hopefully there was a reason we all had to go through this many episodes of this man! May Jesus still love us all.

The Bachelorette airs Mondays at 8 p.m. on ABC.
