The Latest: President declares emergency over Cal quakes – KSBY San Luis Obispo News

July 8th, 2019

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Latest on earthquakes in Southern California (all times local):

8:15 p.m.

President Donald Trump has declared an emergency for California after two major earthquakes and thousands of aftershocks.

Monday’s declaration paves the way for federal aid to help those hard-hit by the quakes.

The declaration authorizes the Federal Emergency Management Agency to coordinate disaster relief efforts in Kern and San Bernardino counties.

A magnitude 6.4 quake on Thursday and a 7.1 quake on Friday damaged many homes and roads in the Mojave Desert towns of Ridgecrest and Trona.

An official says she expects “dozens” of properties will be found damaged by recent earthquakes once the Southern California town of Ridgecrest completes its review.

Kern County spokeswoman Megan Person says Monday that inspectors will need several more days to assess all the damage in the desert community.

Person says 100 people were staying at Ridgecrest’s main shelter as of Sunday afternoon. She says an additional 43 evacuees were camping on the lawn outside, afraid to go indoors.

She says officials are bringing in counselors to help residents still on edge as aftershocks rattle the area.

A magnitude 6.4 earthquake Thursday and a magnitude 7.1 quake Friday were centered 11 miles (18 kilometers) from Ridgecrest. The town is in the Mojave Desert about 150 miles (241 kilometers) from Los Angeles.

12:10 p.m.

It could be days before water service is restored to the Southern California desert town of Trona, where officials are still assessing damage from last week’s powerful earthquakes.

San Bernardino County spokesman David Wert says Monday that 10 residences have been red-tagged as uninhabitable, but he expects that number to rise. He says he has seen homes that shifted 6 feet (nearly 2 meters) off their foundations during the magnitude 6.4 earthquake Thursday and a magnitude 7.1 quake Friday.

Wert says the county is providing bottled water and trucking in portable toilets and showers. Electricity was restored over the weekend, allowing people to use much-needed air conditioners as daytime temperatures approached 100 degrees (38 Celsius).

Wert says the quakes have rattled residents’ nerves but also pulled the community together.

12:05 a.m.

Shaken residents are cleaning up from two of the biggest earthquakes to rattle California in decades as scientists warn that both should serve as a wake-up call to be ready when the long-dreaded “Big One” strikes.

California is spending more than $16 million to install thousands of quake-detecting sensors statewide that officials say will give utilities and trains precious seconds to shut down before the shaking starts.

Gov. Gavin Newsom said it’s time residents did their part by mapping out emergency escape routes and preparing earthquake kits with food, water, lights and other necessities.

A magnitude 6.4 earthquake Thursday and a magnitude 7.1 quake Friday were centered 11 miles (18 kilometers) from the small desert town of Ridgecrest, about 150 miles (241 kilometers) from Los Angeles.

Hannah Brown’s Tweets During The Bachelorette Are Very Good and a Little Shady – E! NEWS

July 8th, 2019

In case you haven’t been paying attention this season of The Bachelorette, Hannah Brown is extremely willing to speak her mind when she feels it necessary.

Lately she’s been feeling it necessary each and every Monday night as she livetweets her season of The Bachelorette—which she appears to be watching with her parents—and all we really want is to be watching it with her.

During this week’s episode, which chronicled the infamous hometown dates where each of her potential husbands takes her to meet their families in their hometowns. It started with Peter, then Tyler, then Luke, and then Jed, which was the most interesting due to what has now been alleged about the fact that he had a girlfriend up until he left for the show.

This week, Hannah got into the plane puns with Pilot Pete.

She made Train references during her date with Tyler in Jupiter, Florida.

And she gave us a little insight into the moment where Tyler hopped in the car with her for a very hot makeout in the backseat.

Right around the time past Hannah and Luke arrived at Luke’s Sunday School for their date, Hannah tweeted this.

Hannah then pointed out a slightly strange thing she said to Luke’s family even if it was accurate.

Apparently she was sick and didn’t know what she was saying as she told Luke’s family the Luke she knew was sorta…not great.

And this one right here is our favorite, because we are slightly obsessed with one woman we met tonight by the name of Jed’s mom. Just moments after Jed and Hannah sat down to dinner, she made an incredible toast that isn’t exactly what you’d imagine giving when you’ve just met your son’s new very serious TV girlfriend.

“Here’s to everyone trusting their intuition and their gut everyday. When you stick to your truth, it’s beneficial to everybody,” she said.

“OK, great!” Hannah said. Then, present day Hannah tweeted this.

Of course, at the time, Hannah hadn’t yet heard the accusations that Jed had had a serious girlfriend and only did The Bachelorette to promote his music career, which he continued to do tonight as he and Hannah spent their day writing a song together, but we suspect that his mom did know exactly what was up.

Hannah also made fun of her inability to choose between Luke and Jed when it came to the last rose of the night and ended up giving them both roses, because you can’t compare apples and oranges and cantaloupes.

She made us REALLY wish we could watch with her entire family and also wonder what they could possibly be saying that she can’t share. (This was also during that fruity rose ceremony.)

She made reference to Chris Harrison’s other job.

And she left us with this very relatable and very accurate GIF.

Anyway, the moral of this story is that you need to be following Hannah each week during The Bachelorette, especially for the responses from her parents, like this one after she eliminated Mike and kept Luke, like a crazy person.

Never change, Hannah. Please.

The Bachelorette airs Mondays at 8 p.m.

Rappers Are Starting Swedish Boycott In The Name Of A$AP Rocky – HipHopDX

July 8th, 2019

Twitter – A$AP Rocky is still behind bars in a Swedish jail while prosectors decide whether to charge him with aggravated assault. Meanwhile, his fellow rappers are gearing up for battle and have decided to cross Sweden off their tour schedules indefinitely.

Tyler, The Creator hopped on Twitter to let people know, “no more sweden for me, ever,” while ScHoolboy Q echoed those sentiments with “I’m not goin nomo eitHer…#FLACKO.”

.centered-ad { text-align: center; margin: 0 auto; } #div-gpt-ad-body1 >div { line-height: 0; position: relative; margin-bottom: 16px; } #div-gpt-ad-body1 >div>iframe { margin-bottom: 240px; position: absolute; } .article-advertisement.article-body.article-news{ margin-top: 16px; } .article-advertisement.article-body.article-news p { margin-top: 0; }

T.I. shared their comments to his Instagram page on Monday (July 8) and captioned it with, “Welp…There it is…Sweden’s now officially outside of the culture on the NO GO list!!! Until they @FreeFlacko it’s UP!!!”

Lil Yachty followed Q’s lead and EarthGang had already joined the boycott via Twitter on Sunday (July 7).

“Me 3 will never hit Sweden again… #freeflacko,” Yachty wrote, while EarthGang tweeted, “#FreeFlacko or we boycotting Sweden.”

Rocky was arrested in Stockholm last Tuesday (July 2), two days after a fight broke out between two groups of men. In video captured of the melee, Rocky and his entourage attack a man who’d been harassing them over a pair of broken headphones.

Authorities are reportedly keeping the Testing rapper for at least two weeks. Swedish prosecutors have already released Rocky’s bodyguard (who was allegedly involved in the fight) due to “insufficient evidence,” but won’t release Rocky.

If convicted, Rocky could face up to six years behind bars. It should be only a matter of time before other artists join in the Swedish boycott. For now, Tip, Tyler and ScHoolboy appear to be leading the charge.

‘Total failure’: Hong Kong leader says extradition bill is dead after mass protests – CBC News

July 8th, 2019

Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam said on Tuesday the extradition bill that sparked the territory’s biggest political crisis in decades was dead, admitting that the government’s work on the bill had been a “total failure.”

The bill, which would have allowed people in Hong Kong to be sent to mainland China to face trial, sparked huge and at times violent street protests and plunged the former British colony into turmoil.

In mid-June, Lam responded to the huge protests by suspending the bill, but that move failed to mollify critics, who continued to demonstrate against the bill and call for Lam’s resignation.

Hong Kong was returned to China from Britain in 1997.

Kourtney Kardashian Balls Her Eyes Out Over Turning 40! WATCH! – PerezHilton.com

July 8th, 2019

Kourtney Kardashian admits she has “anxiety” about getting older!

In a sneak peek of KUWTK — which will return to E! in the fall — the eldest Kardashian-Jenner sibling gets emotional about turning the big 4-0 — which happened in April of this year.

While speaking to sister Khloé Kardashian, the mother-of-three dished:

“I do think that turning 40, like it almost makes you analyze like where you’re at in your life… It’s just giving me anxiety.”

When asked what she is specifically thinking about, Scott Disick‘s ex admitted she wished she had more time.

“Now that I’m doing [her lifestyle website] Poosh, I just always wish I had more time… I feel like I want to cry.”

When Khloé asked “Why?” Kourtney said, “it gives me anxiety.”

Kourtney elaborated she doesn’t “know why because then I’m like I have so much and I should just be so happy.”

In regards to whether or not she is happy, Kourtney answered:

“I mean, I am… But then sometimes I’m just like it makes you really like analyze just like where you’re at and then I’m like sometimes, ‘What am I doing?’”

Khloé then asked:

“What are you doing wrong?”

While Kourtney believed she was doing “nothing” wrong, and she was “just living life,” she revealed: “but then sometimes I’m like I’ll just do stupid s**t to like distract from really thinking about stuff that is maybe more important. I don’t know. But then half of me is like, ‘Live your life, have fun.’”

Khloé tried to comfort her by saying:

“But if that makes you happy, you know that’s completely okay for your life. What if you enjoy the life that you have right now? If you’re happy, that’s all that should matter for any of us. But I really don’t think your soul is happy. I think you feel incomplete somewhere that you’re scared.”

Back in April, a People insider revealed Kourt was initially reluctant to turn 40, but is now embracing the milestone, saying:

“When she talked about turning 40 a while back, she didn’t seem too excited… Turning 40 is a big deal. But instead of seeing it as something negative, Kourtney turned it around and she seems very excited about her life just in general.”

One of those exciting things is Poosh, which launched that same month.

“She feels great about many things that she has accomplished so far… She is very excited about Poosh. She has been very focused on it. She has a small team that helps out, but she’s putting in many hours making sure her site is fun, educational and features brands that she loves.”

Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam says extradition bill is dead amid mas protests – Global News

July 8th, 2019

Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam said on Tuesday the extradition bill that sparked the territory’s biggest political crisis in decades was dead, admitting that the government’s work on the bill had been a “total failure.”

Story continues below

But Lam’s attempt to restore order in the Asian financial hub and cling to her job did not satisfy many protesters who demanded she completely withdraw the bill and charged her with playing word games by declaring the bill dead.

The bill, which would have allowed people in Hong Kong to be sent to mainland China to face trial in courts controlled by the ruling Communist Party, sparked huge and at times violent street protests and plunged the former British colony into turmoil.

In mid-June, Lam responded to protests that drew hundreds of thousands of people into the streets by suspending the bill.

On Tuesday she admitted “there are still lingering doubts about the government’s sincerity or worries whether the government will restart the process in the legislative council.”

“So, I reiterate here, there is no such plan, the bill is dead,” Lam told a news conference.

University students who have made up the bulk of protesters shrugged off Lam’s latest comments, saying nothing more than a full withdrawal of the bill will do.

“What we want is to completely withdraw the bill. She is playing word games,” said Chan Wai Lam William, General Officer of the Student Union of Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Demonstrators have called for Lam to resign as Hong Kong’s Chief Executive (CE), for an independent investigation into police actions against protesters, and for the government to abandon the description of a violent protest on June 12 as a riot.

“It is not a simple thing for CE to step down, and I myself still have the passion and undertaking to service Hong Kong people,” she said when asked about the protesters’ demands.

“I hope that Hong Kong society can give me and my team the opportunity and room to allow us to use our new governance style to response to people’s demand in economy and in livelihood.”

Chief Executives of Hong Kong are selected by a small committee of pro-establishment figures stacked in Beijing’s favor and formally appointed by China’s central government. Lam’s resignation would require Beijing’s approval, experts say.

China has called the protests an “undisguised challenge” to the “one country, two systems” model under which Hong Kong has been ruled for 22 years since it was handed back to China.

Lam said the June 12 protest, which saw police fire tear gas, rubber bullets and beanbag rounds at demonstrators, had not been given a label, but reiterated any decision to prosecute protesters would be one for the justice department.

“Any demand that we should run an amnesty at this stage, that we will not follow up on investigations and prosecutions of offenders is not acceptable, because that bluntly goes against the rule of law in Hong Kong,” she said.

Hong Kong was returned to China from Britain in 1997 with the promise of a high degree of autonomy, but in recent years there has been growing concern about the erosion of those freedoms at the hands of Beijing.

The planned bill triggered outrage across broad sections of Hong Kong society amid concerns it would threaten the much-cherished rule of law that underpins the city’s international financial status.

Hong Kong is governed under a “one country, two systems” formula that allows freedoms not enjoyed in mainland China, including the right to protest and an independent judiciary.

Lawyers and rights groups say China’s justice system is marked by torture, forced confessions and arbitrary detention, claims that Beijing denies.

“My sincere plea is: Please give us an opportunity, the time, the room, to take Hong Kong out of the current impasse and try to improve the current situation,” Lam said.
