Trump’s latest China tariffs will cost U.S. consumers $200 per year: economists – Global News

August 2nd, 2019

The latest tariffs U.S. President Donald Trump plans to impose on Chinese goods would cost U.S. households an average of $200 a year, some economists estimate, and would start to bite consumers and retailers just as the holiday shopping season begins.

That cost would come on top of the roughly $830 cost imposed per household from Trump’s existing tariffs, according to a New York Federal Reserve analysis.

Story continues below

Trump plans to tax $300 billion of Chinese imports at 10 per cent starting in September with the goal of accelerating trade talks with Beijing to favor the United States. The new tariffs would be in addition to 25 per cent tariffs Trump has imposed on $250 billion in Chinese products. Those are mostly industrial goods. By contrast, the new tariffs would target products used by American consumers, like shoes, clothing and cellphones.

By Friday, Trump’s new planned tariffs had triggered worries, especially among retailers, about the consequences. Retail stores, many of which have been struggling, would have to make the painful choice of either absorbing the higher costs from the new tariffs or imposing them on price-conscious customers.

Additionally, China has signaled the likelihood of imposing counter-tariffs on U.S. goods, which would hit American exporters. The stock market sold off sharply on Friday, in part over concerns about the effect on corporate profits.

For retailers already feeling pressure, the higher prices would hit hard just as the critically important holiday shopping season was getting under way.

Some companies are considering moving up their delivery of goods before the new tariffs take effect. Isaac Larian, CEO of Los Angeles-based MGA Entertainment, which makes the popular L.O.L. doll, said the company will be accelerating shipments from China to the U.S. ahead of the Sept. 1 deadline — and will pay an extra $300 to $400 more per shipping container to do so.

He envisions having to raise prices 10 per cent across his entire toy line.

“A lot of consumers can’t afford it, and demand will go down,” Larian said.

iPhone sales would also be hurt if consumers respond to the tariffs by keeping their existing devices to avoid higher prices. Wedbush Securities analyst Daniel Ives estimates that Apple will sell 6 million to 8 million fewer iPhones in the U.S. if it includes the tariff in the sale price.

Peter Bragdon, executive vice president at Columbia Sportswear, said his company had been diversifying away from China and now makes products in more than 20 countries. He said he thinks companies like Columbia Sportswear will fare better than the smaller outdoor rivals.

WATCH: Kamala Harris slams Trump on trade policy with China

“The larger companies that have the experience are going to be able to weather really bad public policy,” he said.

Washington and Beijing are locked in a battle over complaints that China steals or pressures companies to hand over technology. The Trump administration worries that American industrial leadership might be threatened by Chinese plans for government-led creation of global competitors in robotics and other technologies. Europe and Japan echo U.S. complaints that those plans violate Beijing’s market-opening commitments.

Companies were already shifting to suppliers outside of China in countries such as Vietnam to avoid the existing tariffs on $250 billion worth of Chinese imports. But plenty of clothing and footwear companies are still vulnerable, and the president’s announcement means that all Chinese imports might be taxed.

In 2018, 42 per cent of all U.S. sold apparel was made in China, according to the American Apparel & Footwear Association, a trade group. That number is 69 per cent for footwear.

“This creates a cash crunch, a lot of confusion and uncertainty,” said Steve Lamar, executive vice president of the trade group. “It couldn’t come at a worse time.”

The Trump administration has publicly denied that consumers would be significantly harmed by the tariffs.

“Any consumer impact is very, very small,” Larry Kudlow, director of the National Economic Council, told reporters Friday.

But based on estimates from Oxford Economics, the planned tariffs would cost $200 per household. This would be in addition to the estimated $831 per household cost from the existing tariffs.

Taken together, the tariffs would more than wipe out the savings a middle-class household received from Trump’s 2017 income tax cuts. The average tax filer earning between $50,000 and $75,000 paid $841 less in taxes last year, according to Congress’ Joint Committee on Taxation.

Many economists forecast that the proposed tariffs would shave about 0.1 per cent off economic growth but that the real risk is a further escalation and side effects that could be devastating.

Douglas Porter, chief economist at BMO Capital Markets, likened the president’s actions to the errors that led to destruction in World War I.

He said of World War I: “Leaders were relentlessly overconfident on the prospects of victory, fully convinced that any war would be brief, incompetent in planning and execution, and miscalculated economic damage. Accordingly, the war dragged on for over four years at terrible, terrible costs. See any parallels?”

Answering his own question, Porter noted that Trump has declared that trade wars are “good” and “easy to win.”

On Friday, China threatened retaliation in ways that could magnify the potential damage to both of the world’s two biggest economies. Stocks fell around the globe as investors adjusted to these risks.

Beijing accused Trump of violating his June agreement with President Xi Jinping to revive negotiations aimed at ending a costly fight over Beijing’s trade surplus and technological ambitions. China’s new U.N. Ambassador Zhang Jun suggested that the new tariffs could halt negotiations that were expected to resume next month.

Later, outside the White House, Trump told reporters that he thinks Xi wants to make a deal but that “frankly, he’s not moving fast enough.”

“China has to do a lot of things to turn it around,” Trump said. The tariff increase “goes on Sept. 1, and frankly, if they don’t do them, I can always increase it very substantially.”

Secrets Revealed From Taylor Swift’s First Lover Secret Session – E! NEWS

August 2nd, 2019
Bathing Suit, Bikini, Taylor Swift

A new Taylor Swift era is upon us, and that means Swifties around the world are begging for a golden ticket to one of her secret sessions.

Ahead of an album release, it’s become tradition for the pop star to handpick a group of fans to her home for a private listening party. On Friday, she kicked off her very first Lover secret session in London, where a very exclusive group of Swift loyalists gathered to mingle with their idol and listen to Lover in its entirety.

While attendees are sworn to secrecy (the T. Swift code of honor is a thing, OK?!), there are few details that have made their way out since the session wrapped. Let’s break it down, shall we?

Lover Has Something For Every Music Fan:

If there was one word that guests had to describe Taylor’s new album it would be “BOP!” As one fan described, “There’s some really stripped down stuff and some hardcore bops. But all in all, amazing. If reputation wasn’t your cup of tea, I am sure you will love Lover.”

Taylor’s Favorite Song Ever Is On the Upcoming Album:

According to one lucky attendee, the 10-time Grammy winner revealed that her favorite track of all-time is included on Lover. Of course, she couldn’t reveal which one just yet, so she told the fan that “All Too Well” will always have a special place in her heart.

And One Song in Particular Might Make You Cry:

Break out the Kleenex, because Taylor is going deep on Lover. One fan went as far to say they almost cried “uncontrollably” after hearing one track, adding, “A few of the other songs made me tear up a little… But that was ’cause they were very sweet and romantic!”

Another fan compared Lover to 1989, explaining, “It was definitely a mixed bag, but [a] very real and raw album.”

Taylor Shared a Special Moment With One LGBTQ+ Fan:

After writing an emotional letter to Taylor describing how her hit song “ME!” inspired him on his coming out journey, the fan revealed that she read the piece out loud during the secret session.

Yes, Taylor Baked for Her Swifties and Showered Them With Gifts:

Guests were treated to a plethora of desserts handmade by the one and only T. Swift, which included multi-color rice krispies treats and heart-shaped cookies. They also went home with Lover swag bags and pins saying “Lover Secret Sessions 2019.”

Any Other Deets?

While Swifties were asked to keep most info about the album under tight lock and key, we did get some additional insight into life at home for one of the biggest musicians in the world. There were reportedly about 40 board games in Taylor’s closet, in addition to a drone. Additionally, one fan said Swift had Le Labo’s Santo 26 candles throughout her home, and Jo Malone hand soap in her bathroom. The more you know, right?

Keep checking back to E! News for more updates on Taylor’s upcoming album.

Ontario Police Investigating Influx Of Tips About Bryer Schmegelsky And Kam McLeod – HuffPost Canada

August 2nd, 2019

Ontario Provincial Police have assigned a team of investigators to look into a spike in tips regarding two young men wanted in multiple murders in British Columbia.

Police said Friday the reports have come in from across the province, and investigators cannot confirm at this time whether any of the sightings are, in fact, of 18-year-old Bryer Schmegelsky and 19-year-old Kam McLeod.

A few possible sightings were reported in Ontario at a time when the hunt for the suspects was focused in Manitoba, and those were dealt with by local detachments, said Staff Sgt. Carolle Dionne.

But reports have been pouring in over recent days, with more than 30 coming in over eight hours Thursday, she said. As a result, a team was created to investigate the tips in a centralized manner, including revisiting earlier reports, she said.

Darryl Dyck/Canadian Press

RCMP share security camera images of Kam McLeod, 19, and Bryer Schmegelsky, 18, during a news conference in Surrey, B.C. on July 23, 2019.

While some reported sightings are quickly debunked, it’s important that people send in their information, Dionne said.

“The more information (there is), it makes it easier for us to follow up on … We can’t dismiss it either if it’s vague or doesn’t have enough content but it may take us longer to filter through and try to figure out was there any merit into this tip,” she said.

“We really don’t want to discourage people from continuing to report because it could be that one tip that might be legitimate, that might be a true sighting.”

The fact that so many people are flagging possible sightings shows the case has captured public attention, she said.

“It’s telling us that people are listening to the news and people are being extra vigilant … And there’s that heightened sense of, ‘hey, we don’t know where they are, we don’t know where they may be, they could show up in my backyard.’”

Suspected of killing three people

Provincial police are working with the RCMP as they probe incoming reports, Dionne said.

A manhunt spanning several provinces began last week after Schmegelsky and McLeod were named as suspects in three killings.

Vancouver researcher Leonard Dyck and Australian Lucas Fowler and his American girlfriend Chynna Deese were found dead last month in northern B.C.

Ontario Provincial Police warn the two suspects are considered dangerous and should not be approached.

Mounties considering foul play as search for missing Surrey men continues – Vancouver Sun

August 2nd, 2019

Ryan Provencher, 38, and Richard Scurr, 37, were last seen in the 16400 block of 23A Avenue in Surrey on July 17.

Surrey RCMP are seeking two missing men from Surrey. Ryan Provencher (left) and Richard Scurr (right) have not been seen or heard from since 12:30 p.m. July 17, 2019 when Provencher picked up Scurr in a 2019 white Jeep Cherokee in the 16400 block of 23A Avenue in Surrey, B.C. The vehicle was found unoccupied near Logan Lake. HANDOUT / PNG

As the search for two Surrey men enters its third week, investigators are weighing the possibility of foul play in their disappearance.

Ryan Provencher, 38, and Richard Scurr, 37, were last seen in the 16400 block of 23A Avenue in Surrey on July 17.

Police believe the pair were headed to Spences Bridge, where a business associated with Provencher is located, but no one has seen or heard from the two men since they left for the B.C. Interior community, and investigators have been unable to confirm that they ever arrived.

On Friday, 12 days after discovering the Jeep associated with the two men in a wooded area near Logan Lake and then ruling out that the men were missing in that area, police returned to the Spences Bridge business property, armed with a search warrant in the hopes of finding evidence that might move the missing persons case forward.

“Given the length of time Ryan Provencher and Richard Scurr have been missing, officers are also considering that foul play may be a factor in this investigation,” Surrey Mounties said in a news release.

Investigators are asking anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the two men to contact the Surrey RCMP.

Disney Channel is paying its respects. The network dedicated Descendants 3 to late star Cameron Boyce, and followed up the dedication with a heartwarming video tribute to the young actor who passed away.

Boyce, known for playing Luke on Disney Channel’s Jessie and Carlos in the Descendants franchise, passed away at the age of 20 due to an epilepsy complication.

“From a young age, Cameron Boyce dreamed of sharing his extraordinary artistic talents with the world. As a young man, he was fueled by a strong desire to make a difference in peoples’ lives through his humanitarian work. He was an incredibly talented performer, a remarkably caring and thoughtful person and, above all else, he was a loving and dedicated son, brother, grandson and friend,” Disney Channel said in a statement after his passing.

“We offer our deepest condolences to his family, castmates and colleagues and join his many millions of fans in grieving his untimely passing. He will be dearly missed,” the network concluded.

In the video tribute, which you can see above, Disney unearthed early audition footage and behind-the-scenes video of Boyce working on Jessie and Descendants, as well as previous interviews with his costars singing his praises. There’s a blooper featuring the moment he made Michelle Obama break during a guest spot.

“Everything you are…Every smile, every laugh, every dance, every hug, every moment, everyone you touched…you mean everything to us,” Disney Channel said in the video.

Ebola: Half of cases going undetected – DW (English)

August 2nd, 2019

An estimated half of Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo are going unidentified, the country’s new Ebola response coordinator, Jean-Jacques Muyembe, has told reporters.

“If we continue on that basis, this epidemic could last two or three years,” Muyembe said at a Friday news conference in Goma, a city located on Congo’s eastern border with Rwanda. He added that the current goal is to bring the detection rate to 80% by strengthening surveillance.

The remarks came a day after Congolese authorities raced to contain the Ebola epidemic after a gold miner with a large family contaminated several people in Goma before dying of the hemorrhagic fever. Muyembe said the man’s wife and 1-year-old daughter had tested positive for the disease but were doing well in treatment.

This was the fourth case confirmed in Goma, a city more than 350 kilometers (220 miles) south of where the outbreak was first detected. Health experts fear that an accelerated number of cases in Goma could lead to an outbreak of the disease in neighboring Rwanda.

At least 1,800 people have been killed by the deadly virus since the outbreak began a year ago — the second-worst Ebola outbreak on record. Between 2013 and 2016, Ebola infected around 28,000 people in West Africa, killing an estimated 11,300 in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone.

New Ugandan vaccine

Researchers in neighboring Uganda have launched the largest trial of an experimental Ebola vaccine that is expected to be deployed in Congo.

The Janssen Pharmaceuticals vaccine trial involves up to 800 people in Mbarara, a city in western Uganda. It has been supported by Doctors Without Borders and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

More than 180,000 people in Congo have already received an experimental Merck vaccine, but health experts are worried about the available number of doses. Congo’s former health minister, who stepped down last month, argued against the deployment of the Janssen vaccine, saying a second vaccine would cause confusion on the ground.

Pontiano Kaleebu, a Ugandan researcher who is leading the trial, said the Janssen vaccine has already been tested in about 6,000 people, most of them Africans.

“We are excited about this [trial] … because this is one of the promising vaccines,” Kaleebu told The Associated Press.
