David Berman, the frontman and lyricist for the acclaimed indie rock band Silver Jews, died Wednesday at the age of 52. His record label, Drag City, announced his death via Twitter. No cause of death was announced.

In July, Berman released a new album under the moniker Purple Mountains. The project appeared to be a remarkable comeback for an artist who dealt with substance abuse and depression for much of the 21st century, and attempted suicide in 2003. Packed with poignant lyrics about self-destruction and lost love, the self-titled album follows six albums he recorded under the moniker Silver Jews, an indie rock band that came to embody the genre’s literate strain in the 1990s, alongside frequent collaborators Pavement and labelmates Bill Callahan and Will Oldham.

“When it’s done I want there to be something for the listener to interpret,” Berman told the Washington Post in 2008. “When I write I want there to be more than one level of meaning. I want just a few words to be able to carry lots of different thoughts and ideas.”

“Depression is crippling,” wrote Berman’s friend and collaborator Stephen Malkmus on Twitter Wednesday night, after news of Berman’s death was announced. “He was a one of a kinder the songs he wrote were his main passion esp at the end. Hope death equals peace cuz he could sure use it.”

Berman was also a published poet, who released the collection Actual Air in 1999. When he spoke with the Poetry Foundation last month, after the book was given a hardcover rerelease, the self-deprecating humor of his work in Purple Mountains carried over to the interview.

When asked how he hoped his new music would be received, Berman said, “Before I can think of any other hope I have to hope the music will not bother or disgust other people who are in earshot when it’s played. I’m not complaining. Some people like my singing. But it sounds like bad singing to a lot of other people.”

Berman’s voice didn’t sound bad to the cult following he developed during the 1990s as the leader of Silver Jews, the band he formed in 1989 with future Pavement stars Stephen Malkmus and Bob Nastanovich. Pavement would quickly became indie darlings with the single “Summer Babe” in 1991, so by the time Berman released the first Silver Jews album, Starlite Walker, in 1994, the group was known more as a Pavement side project than a legitimate band. It didn’t help that Starlite Walker‘s closest thing to a hit, “Advice To The Graduate,” featured Malkmus on the chorus.

Berman established himself as a world-class rock lyricist on the following Silver Jews record, 1996’s The Natural Bridge, which did not feature his friends in Pavement. The album includes dozens of lines that flout literal interpretation, yet resonate with wisdom. On the song “The Frontier Index,” Berman sings: “When I was younger I was a cobra, in every case I wanted to be cool. / Now that I’m older and sub-space is colder, I just want to say something true.”

Two years later, Berman reunited with Malkmus for American Water, which became known as Silver Jews’ finest album. Its opening lyric epitomized the poignant pithiness that earned Berman that cult following: “In 1984, I was hospitalized for approaching perfection.”

Berman and Silver Jews continued in fits and starts through 2008, releasing three well-received albums with a band that included his wife, Cassie Berman. He dissolved the band in 2009, saying at the time that he was motivated to right the wrongs of his conservative lobbyist father, Richard Berman.

While the lack of a relationship with his father may have caused the end of Silver Jews, Berman’s comeback as Purple Mountains was fueled by the disintegration of his marriage. Many of the songs on Purple Mountains allude to Berman’s estranged wife, Cassie Berman, and the shame that accompanied their separation. On the album’s foreboding first single, “All My Happiness Is Gone,” Berman sings, “Ten thousand afternoons ago, all my happiness just overflowed. That was life at first and goal to go.” Purple Mountains was slated to begin a six-week, nationwide tour on August 10.

Netflix Signs the Duo Behind HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones’ – The New York Times

August 7th, 2019

Netflix won a battle for talent in the increasingly heated streaming wars on Wednesday.

In a blow to HBO, Amazon and The Walt Disney Company, the longtime producing partners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the creators of the television juggernaut “Game of Thrones,” signed a deal with the streaming company to create new TV shows and feature films.

Deadline first reported the news, and Netflix confirmed it on Wednesday.

Mr. Benioff and Mr. Weiss, who started as fiction writers and met each other as graduate students in the 1990s, adapted the George R. R. Martin series of fantasy novels “A Song of Ice and Fire” into the most popular series in HBO’s history. The show consistently generated social-media conversation during its eight-year run while also winning the Emmy in the best drama category three times.

Other suitors for the duo’s services included HBO, Amazon and Disney.

“They are a creative force and have delighted audiences worldwide with their epic storytelling,” said Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s chief content officer. “We can’t wait to see what their imaginations will bring to our members.”

In a statement, Mr. Weiss and Mr. Benioff said, “We’ve had a beautiful run with HBO for more than a decade and we’re grateful to everyone there for always making us feel at home.”

They also praised Netflix’s leadership team, saying: “We remember the same shots from the same ‘80s movies; we love the same books; we’re excited about the same storytelling possibilities. Netflix has built something astounding and unprecedented, and we’re honored they invited us to join them.”

The move comes as the streaming wars are ramping up, with entertainment companies allocating billions for fresh content and producers with solid track records in greater demand than ever.

Disney’s new streaming service, Disney Plus, is scheduled to premiere in November. HBO Max, the forthcoming service from Warner Media under its new owner, AT&T, will roll out next year. Apple has also gotten in on the act, with original programs of its own scheduled to make their debuts on a new service, Apple TV, in the next few months.

There is a question of how quickly the “Game of Thrones” producers will be able to devote their full attention to their Netflix duties. Mr. Weiss and Mr. Benioff are writing and producing a new “Star Wars” movie for Disney.

The two producers had announced a series for HBO in 2017 set in an alternate-history timeline, in which the Confederacy had won the Civil War. News of the series generated extensive online backlash, and doubts were raised about whether it would ever go into production. The Netflix deal all but kills it off.

Before reaching an agreement with Mr. Benioff and Mr. Weiss, Netflix had signed other major writer-producers, including Shonda Rhimes and Ryan Murphy.

BiP’s Caelynn Says Blake ”Mortified” Her By Leaking Texts – E! Online

The plot thickens in the Bachelor in Paradise scandal as Caelynn Miller-Keyes shares her side of the story.

The former beauty queen is now addressing all the claims that Blake Horstmann made in his dramatic Instagram Story. Like Blake, she is sharing her statement on Instagram for all to see, in the hopes that this scandal can be put to rest once and for all.

First and foremost, Caelynn does not deny sending those messages to Blake. Instead, the contestant explains that her messages to Blake were “taken out of context,” especially since they were a small glimpse into the many conversations they shared. “The reality of the situation is that Blake was not a one night stand at a music festival and the ‪5 am‬ text exchange that Blake chose to share is not an accurate representation of our past relationship,” she explains.

However, Caelynn then adds, “I take ownership for what I said on the beach. I was upset and I let my emotions control my words.”

This largely contradicts Blake’s accusation that Caelynn intentionally created a story that is “far from the truth.” Caelynn herself insists, “I did not go on a show to ruin someone’s character.”

She even claims that she tried to speak with Blake “face to face,” in order to address the issue. “It’s unfortunate that I didn’t get the same respect in return, and I am absolutely mortified our private texts were put out there for the world to see and judge by someone who I trusted and consider a friend nonetheless.”

In regards to Stagecoach, Caelynn seemingly refutes the idea that she saw Blake as a tool for sex and nothing more, despite the texts that make it appear that way. “It’s clear to me that Blake and I had different ideas of what our “relationship” was. We started talking months before Stagecoach. We FaceTimed everyday and talked about potentially skipping paradise to be together,” she explains. “When I say he ghosted me, it was after those few months of us talking.”

On BiP, Miller-Keyes shared that his actions towards her made her feel like she was a “mistake.”

Caelynn, who is a survivor of sexual assault, then reveals that her hook-up with Blake has led to her “being trolled for having sex,” despite her past experience. She states, “I want to be very clear that I am not looking for sympathy. I took the necessary steps to move on and heal, but I will not be abstinent for the rest of my life because of it.”

Moreover, the former beauty queen feels it’s “imperative” for her to share her side of the story, especially since it’s “all over Instagram.”

While the drama will continue onscreen when BiP returns next week, Caelynn says she has already “moved on” and is ready to “share the rest of my journey with you all.”

Scott Disick & Sofia Richie Join Kylie Jenner & Travis Scott In Italy For Her Big Birthday Celebration – Hollywood Life

August 7th, 2019

After Kylie Jenner and Sofia Richie took a girls’ trip to Turks and Caicos, their men tagged along for a second vacation. The ladies went for a stroll with Scott Disick and Travis Scott in Positano ahead of Kylie’s big day!

Scott Disick, 36, and Sofia Richie, 20, enjoyed a “staycation” in Los Angeles on Aug. 2, but they set their sights a little further by following Kylie Jenner, 21, and Travis Scott, 28, to Italy on Aug. 7. Not to say that sipping on Perrier in a bathtub is unadventurous, but vacation No. 2 was arguably more enviable as Scott and Sofia (along with Kris Jenner, 63) trailed the couple on a charming street in the seaside town of Positano. FYI, that’s where all those picturesque photos of a pastel village sprawled across a cliff come from. Sofia was dressed to theme for the southern side of Italy in a mini black floral dress and round brim straw hat, while Scott stuck to his laidback LA style in a black T-shirt and matching shorts.

Kylie and Travis’ daughter Stormi Webster, 1, also joined the vacation crew, who was carried by her mom as the Kylie Cosmetics CEO made her way through the streets with her birthday entourage. The makeup mogul is turning 22 years old on Aug. 9, and to match her maturing age, she dressed in a billionaire-esque outfit: a striped wrap dress, flat top shades and a generous layer of bling. Meanwhile, Travis took an opposite fashion cue in a Bugs Bunny tee.

Amid the hustle and bustle, Scott and Sofia sneaked in a romantic kiss! But they couldn’t get lost in one another’s eyes for too long, as they mingled with Kylie’s entourage on what appeared to be a boat. That would match a TMZ report that claimed Kylie is ringing in her birthday on a $250 million megayacht that’s stocked with a theater, sauna, beauty salon…the list goes on. You know, billionaire essentials. Aside from Scott, Sofia and momager, joining the birthday crew is Kylie’s best friend Stassi Karanikolaou and fellow squad member Yris Palmer, Kylie’s assistant Victoria Villarroel, and Kris’ boyfriend Corey Gamble, according to the outlet.

There has been speculation that this birthday getaway is doubling as a wedding celebration, after an airport employee was seen lifting an extravagant white outfit with a trail of feathers onto the private jet that carried Kylie from Van Nuys to Italy on Aug. 6. It could’ve very well been a dramatic vacation fit, as Kylie’s known to wear, but that didn’t stop the wedding rumors from spreading as fans patiently await her and Travis to get engaged and walk down the aisle!
