The Joker is the kind of comic book character who never gets old. Everyone from Heath Ledger to Jack Nicholson to Jared Leto has had their own spin on Batman’s grinning nemesis, who’s almost as old as Batman, having made his comics debut in 1940.

This year, Joaquin Phoenix will present his own version of DC Comics’ laughing psychopath in the upcoming Warner Bros. Joker movie. But initially when the Oscar-nominated actor was asked to portray the Joker in the upcoming movie, Phoenix said he hesitated.

“There was a lot of fear; but I always say there’s motivating fear and debilitating fear,” Phoenix said in the August 2019 issue of Total Film magazine. “Now, when I look back, I don’t understand why. There’s the fear where you cannot make a step, and there’s the kind where it’s like, ‘OK, what do we do? That’s not good enough.’ And you’re digging deeper and deeper. I love that kind of fear. It guides us, makes us work harder.”

But it looks like Phoenix had nothing to be afraid of. The movie received an eight-minute standing ovation from the audience who watched an early screening of Joker at Venice Film Festival on Aug. 31.

Some of the early reviews are saying that Joker has “a riveting, fully realized and Oscar-worthy performance by Joaquin Phoenix” (Jim Vejvoda, IGN) and “dark, disturbing, brutal and sad, it’s about an abused man who doesn’t start living until he’s dead inside” (Erik Davis, Fandango).

Everything we know about the Joker movie

Warner Bros. described the film to the Hollywood Reporter as an “exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.”

“I wouldn’t quite classify this as like any genre,” Phoenix said in an interview with ComicBook.com in 2018. “I would not say it’s a superhero movie, or a studio movie. Underneath the excitement of these films, and the size of them, there are these incredible characters that are dealing with real-life struggles.”

With the film confirmed via Instagram by director Todd Phillips to have an R rating, an adult version of the Clown Prince of Crime will take center stage.

Is it based on a comic?

“We didn’t follow anything from the comic books, which people are gonna be mad about,” writer-director Todd Phillips said in the August 2019 issue of Empire magazine. “We just wrote our own version of where a guy like Joker might come from. That’s what was interesting to me. We’re not even doing Joker, but the story of becoming Joker. It’s about this man.”

Phillips also revealed the film’s story will be completely original, and won’t follow any previously published comic books that feature the Joker.

Is Batman in it?

It doesn’t look that way. The movie is not connected to the DC Extended Universe series of movies, so it’s a different version of the Joker than appeared in Suicide Squad. Bruce Wayne will appear, along with his trusty butler Alfred, and Wayne’s ill-fated father, proposing the movie is set before Bruce Wayne was orphaned and set to become Batman.

This movie is unconnected to the Gotham TV show, which also recounts the younger days of Bruce Wayne. Gotham will have its own, very different version of the Joker appearing in its upcoming final episode.

Who made it?

Todd Phillips is best known for adult comedies like The HangoverScott Silver, who wrote rap movie 8 Mile, is the other scriptwriter. And it’s executive-produced by cinematic legend Martin Scorsese.

What we know about the plot

On April 2, Warner Bros. Gave a presentation at industry events CinemaCon 2019 in Las Vegas that included a first look at some footage. Phillips then added a cryptic message about the movie.

“There’s been a lot of chatter about what this film is and what it is not,” he said. “When the marketing department at Warner asked me the other day to describe the movie, I said ‘I can not.’ They said at least tell us the genre, and I thought about it for a minute and said, ‘It’s a tragedy.'”

The first trailer suggests this is an original story for the Joker, whose real name in this version of the story is Arthur. The new video footage shows Arthur in therapy, talking about his mother.

“My mother always tells me to smile,” says Arthur in voiceover. “She told me I had a purpose, to bring laughter and joy to the world.”

When Arthur is attacked in the street, he decides to fight back. “Is it just me, or is it getting crazier out there?” Arthur says.

We then see Arthur slowly transforming into the Joker as he tries different clown looks. He goes from a green clown wig to dying his real hair green. Soon he donates to strikes and struts into the world.

“I used to think my life was a tragedy,” he says. “But now I realize it’s a comedy.”

US-China trade war escalates as markets take another hit – Aljazeera.com

September 1st, 2019

The United States began imposing 15 percent tariffs on more than $125bn of Chinese goods – including footwear, smart watches and flat-panel televisions – as China began imposing new duties on US crude, the latest escalation in a bruising trade war.

Stock futures in the US, markets in Asia and oil prices fell early on Monday.

US President Donald Trump said the sides would still meet for talks later this month.

Trump, writing on Twitter, said his goal was to reduce US reliance on China and he again urged US companies to find alternate suppliers outside China.

A new round of tariffs took effect from 0401 GMT on Sunday, with Beijing’s levy of five percent on US crude marking the first time it had been hit since the world’s two largest economies started their trade war more than a year ago.

A variety of studies suggest the tariffs will cost US households up to $1,000 a year and the latest round will hit a significant number of US consumer goods.

In retaliation, China started to impose additional tariffs on some of the US goods on a $75bn-target list. Beijing did not specify the value of the goods that face higher tariffs from Sunday.

The extra tariffs of five percent and 10 percent were levied on 1,717 items of a total of 5,078 products originating from the US. Beijing will start collecting additional tariffs on the rest from December 15.

On Monday morning, US stock futures slid 0.7 percent, setting a dour tone for Asian markets. Japan’s Nikkei slid 0.28 percent in early monring trade, while Hong Kong markets were also down after another weekend of violent anti-government protests.

However, Chinese shares recorded modest gains, with the CSI300 index rising 0.3 percent.

Gold prices gained ground, with spot gold inching up 0.6 percent higher at 0048 GMT after having fallen to a one-week low in the previous session.

Steve Lamar, executive vice president of the American Apparel & Footwear Association, said on Sunday the new tariffs were “just in time for our most important selling season of the year. They claim that they are hurting China but, in reality, they are hurting us. Prices will go up, sales will go down, jobs will be lost.”

He said the US “can make progress with China when we engage with them in calm, productive talks, not when we make it more expensive for Americans to get dressed every day.”

Trump on Sunday cited comments from US economist Peter Morici, who said the tariffs would not affect US consumers that much given a drop in the Chinese currency, and the president called on US companies to find suppliers outside of China.

“We don’t want to be servants to the Chinese!” Trump said. “This is about American Freedom. Redirect the supply chain. There is no reason to buy everything from China!”

Later, he told reporters that talks with China were continuing and the two sides would meet in person in September.

“We are talking to China, the meeting is still on, as you know, in September,” he said. “We’ll see what happens, but we can’t allow China to rip us off anymore as a country.”

China reacts

Chinese state media struck a defiant note.

“The United States should learn how to behave like a responsible global power and stop acting as a ‘school bully,'” the official Xinhua news agency said.

“As the world’s only superpower, it needs to shoulder its due responsibility, and join other countries in making this world a better and more prosperous place. Only then can America become great again.”

Tariffs could not impede China’s development, said the official People’s Daily newspaper of the ruling Communist Party.

“China’s booming economy has made China a fertile ground for investment that foreign companies cannot ignore,” it said, in a commentary under the name “Zhong Sheng”, or “Voice of China”, which is often used to state its view on foreign policy issues.

Last month, Trump said he was increasing existing and planned tariffs by five percent on about $550bn worth of Chinese imports after Beijing announced its own retaliatory tariffs on US goods.

Tariffs of 15 percent on cellphones, laptop computers, toys and clothing are to take effect on December 15.

The US Trade Representative’s Office said on Thursday it would collect public comments through September 20 on a planned tariff increase to 30 percent on a $250bn list of goods already hit with a 25 percent tariff set for October 1.

For two years, the Trump administration has sought to pressure China to make sweeping changes to its policies on intellectual property protection, forced transfers of technology to Chinese firms, industrial subsidies and market access

Trump has also linked the trade talks and the protests in Hong Kong, saying he believes the negotiations with the US had led Beijing to be more restrained in its response to the demonstrations in Hong Kong.

Argentina imposes currency controls to support economy – BBC News

September 1st, 2019

Argentina has imposed currency controls in a bid to stabilise markets as the country faces a deepening financial crisis.

The government will restrict foreign currency purchases following a sharp drop in the peso.

Firms will have to seek central bank permission to sell pesos to buy foreign currency and to make transfers abroad.

Argentina is also seeking to defer debt payments to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to deal with the crisis.

In an official bulletin issued on Sunday, the government said that it was necessary to adopt “a series of extraordinary measures to ensure the normal functioning of the economy, to sustain the level of activity and employment and protect the consumers”.

The central bank said the measures were necessary to “maintain currency stability”.

It also said while individuals can continue to buy US dollars, they will need to seek permission to purchase more than $10,000 (£8,223.50) a month.

Argentina has been struggling with a financial crisis which was exacerbated by the president’s defeat in recent a primary poll.

The peso fell to a record low last month after the vote showed that the business- friendly government of President Mauricio Macri is likely to be ousted in elections in October.

Mr Macri was elected in 2015 on promises to boost Argentina’s economy with a sweep of liberal economic reforms.

But the country is in a deep recession. It has one of the world’s highest inflation rates, running at 22% during the first half of the year.

Argentina’s economy contracted 5.8% in the first quarter of 2019, after shrinking 2.5% last year. Three million people have fallen into poverty over the past year.

Last week, Argentina said it would seek to restructure its debt with the IMF by extending its maturity. This would give the country more time to pay back the money it owes to the IMF.

Rating agencies including Standard & Poor’s and Fitch treated the move as a default, and downgraded the country’s credit ratings.
