TWRA confirms, CWD spreads in West Tennessee – WBBJ-TV

October 3rd, 2019

MADISON COUNTY, Tenn. — The number of deer with Chronic Wasting Disease continues to rise as the disease spreads across West Tennessee, and now officials are asking for help.

According to Amy Spencer with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, there is now confirmation of CWD in Madison County.

“It is actually the second one in Madison County, but it does cause a change,” Spencer said.

Now that deer in Madison County are testing positive for CWD, two additional counties are on alert. It will add Gibson and Crockett counties to be part of a CWD affected area.

Spencer says reducing deer-to-deer contact is vital to stopping the spread of this disease.

“What that means to the hunters and residents is it puts a feeding ban in. So, no more feeding the wildlife in those counties, and it also puts exportation, importation restrictions into those counties,” Spencer said.

This new case brings the number of affected counties in West Tennessee to ten. Six are CWD high-risk counties, and four have positive cases of CWD.

“I hope this doesn’t discourage anyone from hunting. We still need the hunters out there. We need them harvesting the deer so we can get more samples in these outlines areas,” Spencer said.

Experts say they do not encourage people to eat deer affected by CWD.

As of now deer in Tipton, Fayette, Hardeman and Madison counties have all tested positive for CWD.

Miley Cyrus & Cody Simpson Spotted Making Out After Her Kaitlynn Carter Split, Claims Fan – Hollywood Life

October 3rd, 2019

Miley Cyrus and Cody Simpson have taken their relationship out of the friend zone! A source spills to HollywoodLife EXCLUSIVELY that they were seen kissing in Los Angeles on Oct. 3.

Miley Cyrus, 26, seems to have a thing for Australians! Fresh off her back-to-back splits from Liam Hemsworth, 29, and Kaitlynn Carter, 31, Miley was reportedly seen “making out” with popstar Cody Simpson, 22 on Thursday, Oct. 3 in Los Angeles. “Her and Cody walked into Blue Bottle Coffee by mistake and seemed all friendly. Then came into a place next door called Backyard Bowls on Beverly Blvd. They were in between sitting and standing while Cody waited for his smoothie bowl to go,” eyewitness Ashleigh tells HollywoodLife EXCLUSIVELY. “Whilst Cody was standing, they were kissing, they sat down and were talking for a moment and Miley got up and sat on his lap and started making out with him, and then they left together. They were in there for at least 15 minutes.”

Earlier in the day, eyewitness Ashleigh tweeted about the sighting, saying “Just casually sitting in this smoothie bowl place today and I literally not even joking just seen Miley Cyrus with Cody Simpson hooking up HAHAHAHAHA,” then adding, “Wasn’t she recently divorced? Girl loves them Aussies.” A second fan, Susannah, also tweeted, “miley cyrus and cody simpson making out right next to me while I enjoy my smoothie bowl.”

Miley and Cody have had a longstanding friendship, and have been seen hanging out various times over the years. “Miley is one of my best friends and she helps with some of that transitional stuff — trying to escape your childhood,” Cody gushed to GQ Australia in December 2015. “She’s super open-minded and I’m working on becoming more like that.” The duo were also thought to be dating in September 2015,  after they were spotting dining at The Nice Guy and clubbing at LA hot-spot 1Oak. Cody even third-wheeled Miley and her then-boyfriend Patrick Schwarznegger on a trip to Miami back in 2014, and Miley helped him ring in his 18th birthday that same year.

Cody previously dated Gigi Hadid, 24, from 2013 – 2015, but the pair have remained close after their split. “It was a super-cool experience, having a first love like that. Then people started paying way more attention to us, which took its toll because I didn’t want to be a celebrity – just some guy who’s dating models,” Cody admitted to GQ Australia in the same interview. “It started getting super gnarly where we couldn’t go out to restaurants. I got scared. Then I had to go away on tour, and we ended up splitting up.” Cody was most recently linked to model Clair Wuestenberg.

Deadly mosquito-borne virus puts Michigan residents on edge – The Detroit News

October 3rd, 2019

Vicksburg — Karen Wile thought the worst when her 6-year-old son, Gabe, had a 103-degree fever last week following an insect bite, fearing it was the result of a deadly mosquito-spread virus.

The uneasiness consumed her until she knew it wasn’t the Eastern equine encephalitis virus that has recently killed four people in Michigan and left one child without the ability to speak.

Gabe only had the flu, but Wile said this week that “the threat when you get it is real.”

The virus, nicknamed EEE, has put Michiganians on edge, especially those who live in southern Michigan where animals and people have contracted it. The fourth person to die — Stan Zalner, 79, of Battle Creek — reportedly passed away Wednesday after being hospitalized in September with flu-like symptoms.

Like many in their community, Wile’s family has taken precautions. Her 16-year-old son, she says, cannot leave the house without long sleeves or pants. The chalkboard in their home reflects the continued vigilance, screaming in colorful words, “Remember Bug Spray!!”

“Why wouldn’t I do everything that they’re telling us, that the health department tells us to do to mitigate the risk,” said Wile, 52, whose husband, Larry, is the medical director of the Van Buren-Cass District Health Department, where two elderly men recently died of the virus. “I’m not completely flipping out but close. I think a lot of people are just unaware.”

As of Wednesday, nine cases in humans had been confirmed in six southern or southwestern counties, according to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. That many cases in one year alone is serious “when we’ve had not even that many in a 10-year span,” said Lynn Sutfin, spokeswoman for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

Cases have also occurred in 33 animals from 15 counties — including Allegan, Barry, Berrien, Calhoun, Cass, Genesee, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Kent, Lapeer, Montcalm, Newaygo, St. Joseph and Van Buren. It has been detected as far east as Livingston County near Metro Detroit with the death of a horse, state officials said.

The virus carried by mosquitoes has prompted preventive measures, as high school games and events have moved to earlier start times.

“It has that 33% fatality rate, and those that survive have life-long disabilities typically,” said Lynn Sutfin, spokeswoman for the Michigan Department of Health and Human  Services.”So we do know this is very serious. And we have continued to see it spread.”

While there is an EEE vaccine for horses, state officials said there isn’t any for humans.

So in a bid to prevent the condition from spreading, state officials have started aerial pesticide spraying for the first time since 1980. More than 186,000 acres across the state had been sprayed as of Thursday, but some homeowners have opted out because of concerns about the spraying.

State officials say the pesticide, Merus 3.0, does not pose a health risk to humans or animals, including bees and other pollinators such as butterflies. The organic pesticide spray kills mosquitoes on contact, officials said.

The manufacturer says the pesticide — comprised of, in part, vegetable oil and a derivative of chrysanthemum flowers from Africa — is applied at an extremely low dosage rate of less than an ounce per acre.

The fight against EEE will last until the affected areas have a hard frost, which helps kill mosquitoes that thrive in warm weather. There are worries that a frost might not come until later in the month as normal fall temperatures take hold.

“And we do not have a hard frost in the forecast probably after mid-October,” Sutfin said. “So that’s what you need is a couple of nights of really cold weather to kill off your mosquito population, and that’s not in the forecast right now.”

State officials are working with local health officials to keep the public informed and updated. Residents should take proper precautions by applying insect repellent, wearing long-sleeved shirts and not going out in damp areas where mosquitoes harbor late at night, Sutfin said.

If those moves are done, “I think you’re definitely good to go, and I definitely think you should get out there and enjoy our last days of warm Michigan weather,” she said.

But concerns about the virus linger. Dana Castle, 57, of Brady Township near Vicksburg, is worried about the virus, especially since her three grandchildren live in the region.

“I’m not going outside in the evenings,” said Castle, who lives near a horse farm. “Your chances of living through equine encephalitis are 1 in 3. Your odds are not great.”

When asked if people should be fearful, Castle said, “They should be. You’ve got a virus that can kill people. And that’s caused by a mosquito.”

The virus often gets diagnosed too late to save the lives of people who contract it because it mimics stroke-like symptoms or disorientation, said Larry Wile, 57the health director who had to deal with the aftermath of the deaths of the two men over age 60 in Marsellus in Cass County and Paw Paw in Van Buren County.

Pre-existing health conditions such as diabetes and heart disease, he said, can “exacerbate” EEE and “can make you have a more rapid demise.”

“This is a really delicate balance in public health because it is such a small number of people that could get infected by this,” he said. “We’ve had two deaths in our counties, but we don’t want anymore. This is one of the most powerful viruses on our planet, and it’s in our backyard.”

The fear in their community, he said, is real even if it’s tempered by having kids come in at dusk, especially those like his family who live close to lakes and bodies of water.

While the deaths in Michigan have affected older people, the disease has also impacted youth. Since August, Savanah Dehart, 14, from South Portage, has been hospitalized, preventing her from beginning her freshman year at Vicksburg High School.

“If you look at the data, the odds of getting Eastern equine encephalitis from a mosquito bite is extremely rare,” said Keevin O’Neill, who is the superintendent of Vicksburg Community Schools where Dehart attends. “But with hitting close to home with one of our students, my main thing is making sure that everybody is armed with the recommendations and they are following them.”

Shannon Myers, 50, of Vicksburg, added that “we’ve had a lot of debates about” EEE as her daughter, a nursing student in her senior year of college, is concerned. But Myers said she and her husband, Eric, 40, don’t worry as much.

“She’ll send me all of the news reports, and she’s like, ‘Mom, make sure you’re not outside,'” Myers said. “With anything in life, we’re Christians, and you have to live by faith, and you can’t be scared about it.

“But at the same perspective, it’s the balance of using wisdom — things like long sleeves and don’t be out in the thick of the woods.”

Myers said she was around horses when the virus was a concern more than 10 years ago, but it didn’t deter her from outdoor activities. But being smarter about it is the way to go this time around, she said.

“Will we not go for a walk at night? Yes, we will,” Myers said. “But we are going to be a little more conservative.”

Meanwhile, the Wile family is taking extra measures and is delaying camping trips even though the family enjoys them. And Karen Mile said she won’t drop her guard.

“It’s going to be a while until we have a hard frost, so we just have to be careful,” she said.

In the Habs’ Room: ‘There’s a lot of good things to take from tonight’: Julien – Montreal Gazette

October 3rd, 2019

‘It’s a hard-earned point on the road,” said coach Claude Julien, adding that the game had the pace and excitement of a playoff battle.

RALEIGH, N.C. — It was only the first game of the regular season, but this one had the pace and excitement of a playoff game.

Canadiens fans watching back home on TV must have enjoyed it — since they haven’t seen a real playoff game the last two seasons — but the result wasn’t what they wanted as the Carolina Hurricanes won 4-3 in a shootout Thursday night at the PNC Arena.

Tomas Tatar, Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Jordan Weal scored for the Canadiens in regulation time, while Lucas Wallmark, Martin Necas (power play) and Erik Haula scored for Hurricanes. Dougie Hamilton scored the only goal in the shootout to give the Hurricanes the victory.

“I’m glad you guys saw it that way, too,” Canadiens coach Claude Julien said after the game when it was mentioned it had the feel of a playoff game. “I was impressed, honestly, with the pace of this game from both teams. It was a fast-paced game, it was hard-fought. There was battles along the walls and there was a lot of battles in front of the nets. So, no doubt I think both teams are trying to make a point here tonight. At the end of the day, you like the effort of your team and you’re disappointed that a point slipped away. But it’s a hard-earned point on the road against a pretty good hockey club.

“I thought it was a hard-fought game, really, for the first game of the season,” Julien added. “I thought the pace was extraordinary with both teams. They also play a fast game. They attack aggressively, they pinch a lot and, for the most part, there was times where we had some Ds who had a hard time tonight with making some good first passes. But at the end of the day, I think the game we played tonight was a good game. I liked our effort, I liked our pace. We’re down 2-0, we come back and tie it up. There’s a lot of good things to take from tonight.”

Nick Suzuki, playing in his first NHL game, was picked by Julien to shoot third in the shootout after Paul Byron and Jonathan Drouin failed to score.

A vote of confidence for the 20-year-old?

“He’s good at it, so why not?” Julien said. “We always seem surprised that a young player comes in and does those things. I think he’s proven that he’s very good at it. Just because he didn’t score tonight doesn’t mean he’s not a smart player. We’ve seen him score some nice shootout goals in the past, not just with us but with his other teams.”

Defenceman Cale Fleury, also making his NHL debut as a 20-year-old, had some nervous moments early, but did not look out of place at all and finished the game minus-1 with 14:52 of ice time and four hits. Only Ben Chiarot, playing his first game with the Canadiens, had more hits with eight.

“He made a couple of good rub-outs along the boards,” goalie Carey Price said about Fleury. “He’s not huge, but he’s not small and he plays physical. So I’m looking forward to keeping working with him, anyway.”

Said Fleury about his hits: “It’s kind of just how I play. It’s not really something I’m going to go out and look for, but if it’s there I’ll do it.

“One of the TV timeouts, Carey came up to me and said: ‘Welcome to the show,’” Fleury added with a smile. “That’s a pretty cool thing for me in my first game.”

Fleury also had a breakaway in the game, but was stopped by goalie Petr Mrazek.

“That was probably the last thing I was expecting was a breakaway today, but I thought I made a good move,” Fleury said. “I just couldn’t get it over his pad.”

It wasn’t a terrible way to start the season for the Canadiens.

That’s one down and 81 more to go with Canadiens fans hoping they can finally see some real playoff action after that.

Selena Gomez Shows Off Her Long Legs In Black Mini Skirt 2 Days After Justin Bieber’s Wedding – Hollywood Life

October 3rd, 2019

While Justin Bieber had his big wedding with Hailey Baldwin, Selena Gomez had an important event of her own: the premiere of her Netflix series, ‘Undocumented Living.’ The executive producer looked powerful in a leather black skirt!

Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin’s wedding wasn’t the only big event to kick off this fall season! Two days after the lovers tied the knot in South Carolina on Sept. 30, Selena Gomez, 27, was the MVP of her own night at the premiere of a Netflix series she executive produced, Living Undocumented, on Oct. 2. Befitting such a high title, the singer and actress looked like the showrunner in an all-black outfit made up of a leather skirt and blazer, complemented by pointed pumps — all key essentials for a boss lady not bothered by her ex!

Selena shared photos from the memorable night to her Instagram the following day, which included her sitting in a director’s chair and posing with attendees at the screening. The pictures included some of the families featured in the Netflix series about eight undocumented families who suffer under the the looming threat of deportation in the U.S. “Such an honor to share this project with some of my family and friends last night and to introduce them to the amazing, courageous people who shared their stories in the documentary. Grateful to play a part in getting this out into the world. ❤️,” Selena reflected in her post’s caption.

The “Wolves” singer had even more words to say at the screening on Wednesday night! “I’m very grateful that we got to do this. Immigration is all over the news and I understand that, but what was so great about this was bringing the humanity to it and really seeing these people’s hearts and what they’ve contributed and what they are,” Selena told the crowd. The project was especially personal to the Disney alum, since her own family members had immigrated to Texas from Mexico, which she revealed in a moving essay for Time magazine.

Meanwhile, Justin married Hailey (a second time) at the Montage Palmetto Bluff hotel in Bluffton, South Carolina on Monday, Sept. 30. They reportedly exchanged their vows in front of 154 guests, which included famous faces like the Jenner trio (Kylie, Kendall and Kris), Jaden Smith, Joan Smalls and Scooter Braun. Selena did not attend her ex’s nuptials — she and Justin appeared to split for good in March 2018, following an on-again, off-again romance that can be traced to dating rumors that started all the way in 2010.

Miley only married Liam last December, and in the slipstream of the breakup there were rumors that she cheated on him.

The conjecture grew so strong that Miley fired up her Twitter in August to staunchly deny that infidelity caused her latest split from Liam.

‘I f***ed up and cheated in relationships when I was young,’ she confessed, insisting that ‘I am simply in a different place from where i was when I was a younger.’
