‘Star Wars’ Setback: ‘Game Of Thrones’ Duo David Benioff & D.B. Weiss Exit Trilogy – Deadline

October 28th, 2019

EXCLUSIVE: David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the duo who in 2011 launched the singular screen sensation known as Game of Thrones, have walked away from their much-publicized deal with Disney’s Lucasfilm to launch a feature film trilogy in 2022.

Benioff and Weiss were supposed to usher in the post-Skywalkera era of the Star Wars brand with a 2022 new-start story that would stake out a new frontier for the era-defining cinema brand created by George Lucas. The Emmy-winning pair cited their historic deal with Netflix. They said their enthusiasm for Star Wars remains boundless but, regrettably, their schedule is full up.

“We love Star Wars,” the pair said in a statement to Deadline. “When George Lucas built it, he built us too. Getting to talk about Star Wars with him and the current Star Wars team was the thrill of a lifetime, and we will always be indebted to the saga that changed everything.”

That 2022 release date made the Benioff/Weiss start-up the next-in-line Star Wars installment following this December’s The Rise of Skywalker, the finale chapter of the Skywalker family chronicles that have been captivating moviegoers since 1977.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has plenty of other Star Wars projects in the hopper — The Rise of Skywalker in December, The Madalorian in 15 days on Disney+, and the ramping Ewan McGregor series, to name just three — so it’s unclear how much of a setback the now-nixed trilogy presents. There’s no shortage of upcoming collaborators lined up, either, among them Rian Johnson and Kevin Feige.

Kennedy didn’t close shut any doors in her send-off statement on Monday: “David Benioff and Dan Weiss are incredible storytellers,. We hope to include them in the journey forward when they are able to step away from their busy schedule to focus on Star Wars.”

Clearly, it’s a big-fizzle ending for the firecracker-fuse headline from February 2018 when the deal was announced. But the duo’s deal arguably lost some luster during the much-maligned final season of Game of Thrones earlier this year as many fans questioned whether the GOT creators had the storytelling chops to handle a Jedi saga.

In the end, however, it appears the tandem’s deficiency was in time, not talent. In August, Deadline broke the news that the GOT duo had signed a nine-figure deal with Netflix and, on Monday, that commitment was the one that brought about the end of the Great Westeros Experiment by Disney and Lucasfilm.

“There are only so many hours in the day, and we felt we could not do justice to both Star Wars and our Netflix projects,” the GOT pair said in a statement to Deadline. “So we are regretfully stepping away.”

Facebook unveils its first foray into personal digital healthcare tools – TechCrunch

October 28th, 2019

Nearly a year and a half after the Cambridge Analytica scandal reportedly scuttled Facebook’s fledgling attempts to enter the healthcare market, the social media giant is launching a tool called “Preventive Health” to prompt its users to get regular checkups and connect them to service providers.

The architect of the new service is Dr. Freddy Abnousi, the head of the company’s healthcare research, who was previously linked to an earlier skunkworks initiative that would collect anonymized hospital data and use a technique called “hashing” to match the data to individuals that exist in both data sets — for research, according to CNBC reporting.

Working with the American Cancer Society; the American College of Cardiology; the American Heart Association; and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Facebook is developing a series of digital prompts that will encourage users to get a standard battery of tests that’s important to ensure health for populations of a certain age.

The company’s initial focus is on the top two leading causes of death in the U.S.: heart disease and cancer — along with the flu, which affects millions of Americans each year.

“Heart disease is the number one killer of men and women around the world and in many cases it is 100% preventable. By incorporating prevention reminders into platforms people are accessing every day, we’re giving people the tools they need to be proactive about their heart health,” said Dr. Richard Kovacs, the president of the American College of Cardiology, in a statement.

Users who want to access Facebook’s Preventive Health tools can search in the company’s mobile app to find which checkups are recommended by the company’s partner organizations based on the age and gender of a user.

The tool allows Facebookers to mark when the tests are completed, set reminders to schedule future tests and tell people in their social network about the tool.

Facebook will even direct users to resources on where to have the tests. One thing that the company will not do, Facebook assures potential users, is collect the results of any test.

“Health is particularly personal, so we took privacy and safety into account from the beginning. For example, Preventive Health allows you to set reminders for your future checkups and mark them as done, but it doesn’t provide us, or the health organizations we’re working with, access to your actual test results,” the company wrote in a statement. “Personal information about your activity in Preventive Health is not shared with third parties, such as health organizations or insurance companies, so it can’t be used for purposes like insurance eligibility.”

The company said that people can also use the new health tool to find locations that administer flu shots.

“Flu vaccines can have wide-ranging benefits beyond just preventing the disease, such as reducing the risk of hospitalization, preventing serious medical events for some people with chronic diseases, and protecting women during and after pregnancy,” said Dr. Nancy Messonnier, Director, National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, CDC, in a statement. “New tools like this will empower users with instant access to information and resources they need to become a flu fighter in their own communities.”

A 73-year-old man has died of his injuries after being struck by a vehicle in Mississauga.

It happened shortly after 7 p.m. near Hurontario Street and Eglinton Avenue East, Peel Regional police said.

The man was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries, but was pronounced dead a short time later.

It’s not clear why the man was trying to cross where he did. Nobody was with him at the time.

“This is not a crosswalk. This is a six-lane roadway. The general traffic travels at 60 kilometres an hour and unfortunately this gentleman got about two lanes in and was struck by a vehicle travelling on the roadway,” Const. Danny Marttini told CP24 at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and passed out after realizing what had happened.

“The driver did remain on scene. Obviously they were suffering from a bit of shock – they actually fainted when they realized exactly what was taking place,” Marttini said.

She said the driver was taken to hospital to be checked over.

Marttini said police continue to urge both drivers and pedestrians to use more caution on the roads.

“The roadway – it’s a shared area that we’re all using and everybody’s responsible for it,” Marttini said.

Eglinton Avenue is closed from Hurontario Street to Sorrento Drive as police investigate.

Lebron James, Arnold Schwarzenegger among thousands fleeing California wildfire – Global News

October 28th, 2019

A wildfire swept through the star-studded hills of Los Angeles on Monday, destroying several large homes and forcing LeBron James and thousands of others to flee. Meanwhile, a blaze in Northern California wine country exploded in size.

The flames that roared up a steep hillside near the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles’ Brentwood section illustrated the danger the state faces as high winds batter both ends of California and threaten to turn any spark into a devastating inferno.

No deaths from either blaze were reported, but a firefighter was seriously injured in the blaze in Sonoma County wine country.

Some 2.2 million people lacked electricity after California’s biggest utility, Pacific Gas & Electric, shut it off over the weekend in the northern part of the state to prevent its equipment from sparking blazes during windy weather. More deliberate blackouts are possible in the coming days because another round of strong winds is expected.

The company, which was driven into bankruptcy after its equipment ignited several deadly wildfires in recent years, admitted Monday that despite the outages, its power lines may have started two smaller fires over the weekend in the San Francisco Bay Area.

PG&E also has said its transmission lines may have been responsible for the Sonoma County fire.

That blaze, which broke out last week amid the vineyards and wineries north of San Francisco, doubled in a day to at least 267 square kilometres, destroying 96 buildings, including at least 40 homes, and threatening 80,000 more structures, authorities said.

About 156,000 people were under evacuation orders because of the fire, mostly from the city of Santa Rosa.

The flames didn’t discriminate. In wine country, farmworkers who toil in the vineyards were among those displaced. In Los Angeles, James and former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger were driven from their homes.

“Man these LA (fires) are no joke,” the Los Angeles Lakers star tweeted, using an emoji for the word “fires.” ”Crazy night.“

The Hollywood premiere of Schwarzenegger’s “Terminator: Dark Fate” was cancelled Monday night.

Others who own homes in the evacuation zone include Sen. Kamala Harris, a Democrat running for president, who was not home at the time; Walt Disney Co. CEO Bob Iger; and rapper and producer Dr. Dre.

Anxious residents made their way down steep hillsides in the middle of the night in Range Rovers, Teslas and Maseratis. They left behind homes decorated for Halloween — skeletons hanging from homes, goblins sitting on front steps, cobwebs draped over bushes — as a plume of smoke glowed like a giant pumpkin.

David Boyle, 78, awoke at 3 a.m. to his doorbell ringing and police officers pounding on the front door. They warned him the wildfire was advancing toward his house near the Getty complex.

“They said, ‘You need to evacuate.’ I’m like, ‘When?’ They said, ‘Now,”’ Doyle said.

“It’s a fact of life when you live in this area,” he said. “Every place has some problem with disasters. People talk about earthquakes here, but I don’t think it’s as bad as hurricane season.”

Tens of thousands of people were ordered to clear out as the fire spread to more than 600 acres and burned at least five homes, authorities said.

The evacuation area extended west into Pacific Palisades, encompassing some of the most exclusive real estate in California, where celebrities and wealthy professionals live in estates nestled in canyons or on ridgetop retreats that cost tens of millions of dollars but are surrounded by tinder-dry vegetation.

Hours after homes had burned, some of the 1,000-plus firefighters battling the flames were hosing down smouldering ruins. Others attacked flare-ups in the brush-covered wilderness around neighbourhoods.

Helicopters beat the air, and the buzz of chain saws echoed from the canyons. Hills were charred black, and in some places, white ash was all that remained.

The fire shut down southbound lanes of Interstate 405, a major commuting corridor and the route to Los Angeles International Airport from the San Fernando Valley.

The Getty, with its collection of priceless art, was not threatened, fire officials said. The museum gave assurances that its artworks are protected by state-of-the-art technology.

But Mount St. Mary’s University evacuated 450 students from its nearby campus. And the University of California, Los Angeles, cancelled classes — not because of any direct threat from the flames but because of disruptions caused by the fire.

Similarly in Northern California, some 40 school districts in Sonoma County cancelled classes, as did the University of California, Berkeley, which had no power because of the outages.

With no rain and more wind in the forecast, the coming days could be grim.

“This is when we have the most potential for large and damaging fires,” said Thom Porter, chief of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. “All of California is in play right now.”

Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency over the weekend.

The biggest evacuation was in Sonoma County, where some people who packed up and fled had done so two years ago, when devastating wildfires swept through the region, killing 44 people.

At an evacuation centre at Napa Valley College, 15-year-old Francisco Alvarado said he, two younger brothers and his parents decided to leave their Calistoga home ahead of evacuation orders. Two years ago, the family had to flee in the middle of the night.

“I’m pretty mad that we have to keep evacuating,” he said. “I just want to be home. I’m trying to leave here tomorrow. I want to sleep in my bed.”

She said, “The way Meghan treats my dad’s mom is disgusting. And we’ve all just had to sit quietly and I’m just done with it.” Hayley denied her father cheated with Wilson.

She added, “the way that she treated Carly is mind-blowing to me because she holds herself to very high moral standards and she is a great girl who moved to St. Louis across the country because she loves those kids. And it’s just I mean absolutely ludicrous I would say. I can’t even … I keep saying I’m shocked, but I’m not surprised at the way that she goes after people so ruthlessly.”

Meghan and Jim got married back in October 2014. She would join the cast of “Real Housewives of Orange County” in 2015.

The two appeared on the reality show from season 10-12. Meghan came back this season as a guest of the Housewives.

Following her departure from the reality show, Jim has been accused of cheating with another woman.

Back in June, Jim was accused of sending an XXX video to a mistress while Meghan was in the hospital giving birth to their twins.

At the time, Jim admitted to a “lapse in judgment” and said he engaged in an “inappropriate conversation” with the woman — identified as “baseball madame” — but insists the two never had a physical relationship during his marriage to Meghan.

Election defeat leaves some Conservatives questioning Scheer’s leadership – CTV News

October 28th, 2019

OTTAWA — After the Conservative Party failed to win enough seats in the federal election to form government, some party members are questioning whether their leader Andrew Scheer should remain at the helm.

In a phone interview with CTV News, former Conservative MP Terence Young, who represented the party in the Oakville, Ont. riding from 2008 to 2015, but has lost in the past two federal elections, said the party should re-evaluate Scheer’s leadership in part due to how poorly it fared in the Greater Toronto Area.

“He’s already proven that he can’t get any votes in the GTA,” Young said. “What’s going to change in the next election?”

The Conservatives lost all but four of the seats in the GTA in this election, a slight improvement after losing all but two seats in the region back in 2015.

Young isn’t the only Conservative frustrated with Scheer’s leadership. Sara MacIntyre, Stephen Harper’s former press secretary, tweeted on Saturday that Scheer’s stance on LGBTQ issues remains a sticking point for her.

“I am pissed off that the leader of my party WILL NOT walk in a pride parade,” she tweeted. “I am sick of this, disgusted and ashamed. I believe and support in LGBTQ rights, gay marriage and being equal. I no longer support the CPC while a leader like that is at the helm.”

Scheer has a wide range of socially conservative views. He has said that he is personally against abortion, has ruled out marching in a Pride paradein a recent interview and in 2005 gave a now-infamous speech against same-sex marriage.

In an interview with The Canadian Press last week, Scheer said he believes a prime minister can have socially conservative views, while still recognizing that these viewpoints would not be enforced on Canadians.

“I believe that Canadians understand that any number of people can have a different point of view on these issues. What’s important to them is to know whether a prime minister will make changes or seek to make changes,” he said at the time.

“And my assurances to Canadians was that as prime minister, these types of debates would not be re-opened.”

Bob Plamondon, who has written extensively about the Conservative Party, said regardless of Scheer’s promises not to re-open these debates, his stance on social issues hurt his party’s ability to grow its base.

“There are a number of Conservatives MPs who are coming to Ottawa this week to pack their bags,” he said. “They lost in large part because, I think, the leader was out of touch with the mainstream Canadian public opinion,”

Other insiders have said they believe Scheer struggled to connect with voters while on the campaign trail and was hurt by a lack of experience within his inner circle.

However, the Conservatives under Scheer did gain 26 seats in the election and won the popular vote by nearly 250,000 votes, leaving some Conservative strategists to urgeparty members against making a rash decision on his leadership.

“There’s obviously a lot of people who are disappointed with the result, but we also won the popular vote nationally, so let’s not throw everything out, as a result of overreacting,” said Jamie Ellerton, the founder of public relations agency Conaptus and political communicator.

While Scheer has vowed to remain leader for the foreseeable future, a leadership review is expected at the Conservative convention from April 16 to 18 in Toronto.

Ford’s Twitter account retweeted anti-Scheer messages. The premier’s office says a staffer did so in error – Toronto Star

October 28th, 2019

Doug Ford’s Twitter account retweeted criticism of federal Conservative leader Andrew Scheer on Monday, but the premier’s office later said a staffer did so in error.

Screengrabs of Ford’s @fordnation profile taken by Global News show the retweeted messages were originally from an account called @ScheerMustGo. The group’s website says it is made up of Conservative Party members and supporters who are disappointed with Scheer’s leadership after last week’s election results.

One of the tweets highlights how the Conservatives’ vote share in Oakville dropped from four years ago while another notes that a former press secretary to Prime Minister Stephen Harper opposes Scheer’s refusal to march in pride parades.

The premier’s office said late Monday that the tweet was the result of a misunderstanding.

“It was retweeted by a staffer by mistake who used to have access to the premier’s Twitter account,” a senior official told the Star.

Like many political leaders, Ford, who still uses a years-old BlackBerry Classic as his smartphone, does not do his own social media posts.

The premier said last week that he had spoken with Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer after the federal election and wished him the best.

Ford told Newstalk 1010’s Ryan Doyle and Jay Michaels last Thursday that he has no interest in toppling Scheer or running for the federal Conservative leadership.
