A cat owner in Texas is devastated after her pet was accidentally euthanized.

Michelle Olson took her eight-year-old cat Sophie to Suburbia North Animal Hospital in Spring and returned home thinking she had received a rabies shot.

But Olson and her husband received an alarming call from staff urging her to return the animal as soon as possible.

‘It was the doctor herself calling saying, “Please get Sophie back here immediately, we gave her euthanasia instead of a rabies vaccine”,’ Olson recalled to ABC 13.

Olson focused on having quality last moments with her furry friend as she knew Sophie wouldn’t make it.

‘I immediately took her out of her cat carrier and I held her, talked to her, because I knew that was going to be the last thing she would remember. I knew she wasn’t going to come back at that point. I just knew it,’ Olson said. ‘She pretty much was dying in my arms.’

Now Olson is traumatized by what happened.

‘Every time I close my eyes, I see that look on her face and I just can’t get it out of my head,’ Olson cried in a TV interview. ‘They’re very sorry, that’s all they can say really,’ Olson said. ‘It was an accident, I get that, but it was an accident that should’ve never happened.’

Olson said she was speaking out so other pet owners know to take extra care.

Sophie was only going in for a routine checkup.

‘My main concern is not to bash them at all, just want to make public aware to be vigilant, ask questions that you didn’t think you had to ask of your veterinarian so this doesn’t happen to anyone else,’ Olson explained.

At the advice of their legal counsel, the animal hospital has declined to comment on the incident.
